What Is a Credit Score and How Does It Affect Your Finance Application?

Key takeaways
- A credit score is a number that rates your creditworthiness, and lenders use it to judge how risky you are to lend to.
- In Australia scores run from 0 to 1200, and a higher number means lower risk.
- The three main bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Illion, build your score from payment history, how much credit you use and recent enquiries.
- You can lift a low score over time with on-time repayments, less debt and fewer applications.
Plenty of people only think about their credit score the week they apply for a loan, and by then it is a bit late to change it. Andy has been helping Western Australians with finance since 2000, and he would rather have this conversation early, because a few simple habits over a few months can make a real difference to your options.
What a Credit Score Is
A credit score is a numerical rating of your creditworthiness that lenders use to assess loan risk. It is a shorthand for how reliably you have handled credit in the past. In Australia, credit scores range from 0 to 1200, with higher scores signalling lower risk to a lender.
Who Calculates It
Three credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Illion, each hold a credit report on you and calculate a score from it. They look at your payment history, how much of your available credit you are using, and your recent credit enquiries. Because each bureau weighs things slightly differently, your score can vary a little between them.
What Drags a Score Down
Low scores usually come from defaults, late payments, bankruptcies or a run of credit applications in a short period. Even applying for several cards or buy-now-pay-later accounts can leave a mark, because each enquiry is recorded.
How Lenders Use Your Score
Lenders use your credit score to help decide three things: whether to approve you, what interest rate to offer, and what conditions to attach. A strong score widens your choices. A weaker one narrows them, but it rarely closes the door entirely, which is where a broker earns their keep.
| What helps your score | What hurts it |
|---|---|
| Paying bills and loans on time | Missed or late payments |
| Keeping credit card balances low | Maxing out available credit |
| Spacing out credit applications | Several enquiries in a short window |
| Long, steady accounts | Defaults and court judgments |
Improving Your Score
Lifting a score is not a quick trick, it is steady habits: timely repayments, reducing debt and minimising credit enquiries. If you have had a rough patch, that does not mean finance is off the table. Andy works with specialist lenders who look past the headline number, and if your score is the issue, our pages on bad credit and non-conforming home loans and refinancing with bad credit are a good next read.

Credit Score Questions
What is a good credit score in Australia?
It depends on the bureau, but on a 0 to 1200 scale, the higher you sit, the better your terms tend to be. Andy can read your report and tell you how lenders are likely to see it.
Will checking my own credit score hurt it?
No. Checking your own report is a soft enquiry and does not affect your score. It is lender applications that leave a recorded enquiry.
Can I get a loan with a low credit score?
Often, yes. Specialist lenders assess credit impairments case by case rather than declining automatically, and Andy can access those lenders for you.
